2009 Lionsgate US or UK 2 Entertain OOP Blu-ray

Sources: Reddit (opens in a new tab) · Blu-ray.com (opens in a new tab)

Video Notes:
  • The BBC 4K collection and Shout! Factory 4K collection all use the same source, and are all unfortunately using AI upscaling and DNR'ed They are worse than the blurays and the 2023 US Shout! Factory collections are even prone to disc-rot.

  • 2009 Lionsgate US (also prone to disc-rot) or UK 2 Entertain OOP Blu-ray will be the way to go.

  • The 4K collection's Blu-ray seems to be a reprint of previous releases.

Best Audio:

Shout! Factory 4K

Audio Notes:

5.1 track for The Wrong Trousers is in its correct pitch both in music and voices https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=21535755&postcount=103

Unaltered track with the original music cues is on the LaserDisc.

Directors: Bruce Timm & Eric Radomski

WB 4K Blu-ray

Video Notes:

Caveat: the 1.33:1 ratio is NOT included. HDR is sometimes bright.

Best Audio:
  • WB LaserDisc: original Dolby Stereo mix direct copy

  • Warner Archive Blu-ray:original mix new transfer, a tad clearer but not quite as rich sounding

Additional Info:

4K Blu-ray has various issues holding it back despite the new scan. No Academy ratio version is included. The new remix audio is louder, harsher and nowhere near as good as the original. The original option on the 4K Blu-ray is processed and sounds lackluster. The LaserDisc sounds best by far with the Warner Archive Blu-ray coming in a close second.

Criterion 4K Blu-ray

Sources: Criterion Forum (opens in a new tab) · caps-a-holic (opens in a new tab)

Video Notes:

Criterion 4K Blu-ray has original SDR master while Plaion Germany and France has a subtle additional HDR-regrade. Either one is good depending on user preference.
Important to note, Criterion 4K Blu-ray still has different color timing from 2008 Criterion Blu-ray see https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=15680&d2=15679&s1=165346&s2=165329&i=10&l=0

Best Audio:

Original mono is on the 1996 Japan DVD and 2005 Spain Boxset DVD. But 2008 Criterion Blu-ray’s 5.1 remix at least is in the correct pitch. All 5.1 tracks on later 4K-resto BDs have a raised pitch. Furthermore, the 2008 5.1 and 4K-resto 5.1 differ in content in the scene where Tony Leung drinks coffee in slow-mo, with the 2008 version having only background / ambient sound, while the 4K-resto version plays Faye Wong’s song. Note that it's quite easy to pitch correct the 4K-resto 5.1 to match the original pitch and only a delay adjustment is needed to sync.
