Arrow Blu-ray, part of Wandering Ginza Butterfly Collection

Director: Clive Donner

Video Notes:

Suffers from a liberal application of DNR

Best Audio:

5.1 remix: Blu-ray

Stereo:Blu-ray and DVD appear to have the same one, not sure if it’s the original stereo mix.

Director: John Lasseter

Best Video:

Disney 4K Blu-ray

Best Audio:

2001 Disney DVD for the original 6.1 mix

Additional Info:

The international version replaces the American flag in Buzz’s speech with a spinning CGI globe and the American Anthem is replaced with an exclusive piece by Randy Newman titled the ‘One World Anthem’. Bizarrely the 2005 UK DVD retains the US anthem while having the CGI globe.

The original November 1999 end credits start a second earlier on the theatrical versions (found on bootleg telesyncs) rather than the 2001 or 2005 DVDs.

Criterion 4K Blu-ray

Sources: Criterion Forum (opens in a new tab)

Video Notes:

Criterion and Coin de Mire are both based on the same new 4K restoration. They have close quality, but Criterion has thiner and less blocky grain, with better retention in dark areas. It was therefore preferred.

Audio Notes:

Criterion and Coin de Mire are both based on the same new transfer which is superior to the old master. But, again, the audio of Criterion has much higher dynamic range than that of Coin de Mire and was preferred.

Director: Ted Kotcheff

Umbrella/Arrow 4K Blu-ray

Video Notes:

Umbrella/Arrow 4K Blu-ray (FiM encode but the mastering shows signs of DNR albeit only momentarily); all other BDs pretty bad.

Audio Notes:

But whether in the correct speed/pitch is TBC.

Director: Sam Raimi

Best Video:

Sony 4K Blu-ray steelbook

Video Notes:

Sony 4K Blu-ray steelbook, correct audio pitch and more bonus features

Confirmed to be a port of Sony's international 4K, encode different to Lionsgate's. Audio in the correct pitch and a cross-selection of archive extras where the Lionsgate had only one audio commentary. High Def reviewer thought the 2.0 was a mixdown of the 5.1 track.

Unaltered version: 2007 Ultimate Edition DVD? Or 35mm scan

Best Audio:

LaserDisc

Audio Notes:

LaserDisc has the original Mono

Lionsgate 4K Blu-ray audio is in the wrong pitch while the Sony release is in the right pitch
