Kino Lorber OOP Blu-ray

Best Video:

Kino Lorber OOP Blu-ray is exactly the same restoration as the later Paramount Blu-ray, however Paramount Blu-ray runs at a much faster 24fps while Kino Lorber runs at 21fps. According to Paul Cuff's research into the correct fps and length, Kino Lorber is closest to the original 22fps by repeating frames to achieve 21fps in 24fps.

Best Audio:

Kino Lorber Blu-ray:

  • Kino Lorber has the same Bellon score as Paramount VHS and Paramount Blu-ray, but obviously Paramount Blu-ray runs a faster tempo due to changed fps

  • The Bellon score never uses the “Kashmiri Song” that is cited in the film’s intertitles and sung by Valentino on screen. This may well be because the intertitles of the VHS version (for which the score was composed) are from the reissue print, which changes the wording of the Sheik’s song—and thus loses the context of the original song.

  • While no substitute for a real orchestra, the theatre organ score by Ben Model for the Kino Lorber edition at least quotes the “Kashmiri Song” at the appropriate moments.

Criterion Blu-ray although MoC OOP Blu-ray looks similar, it's likely slightly worse

Best Audio:

Only the MoC edition has the Gaylord Carter organ score from the old VHS/LaserDisc release while Criterion has only the orchestral score by Robert Israel and electronic/percussion score by Alloy Orchestra.

Criterion 4K Blu-ray. See nicolas review: https://criterionforum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=841703#p841703 "The new master is simply gorgeous. Beautifully fine-grained, even the opticals don’t look that much less defined than the OCN-shots. Highlights are very nicely graded and the encode preserves them virtually flawlessly. The HDR / DV grade itself is tasteful and makes the film look tasteful. Velvety, silvery and just satisfying to look at. Furthermore, I don’t think NexSpec applied any filtering"

Best Audio:

Twilight Time Blu-ray slightly better than Criterion 4K Blu-ray. Columbia Hi-Fi VHS probably significantly better (not been checked)

Paramount 4K Blu-ray

Best Video:

2024 Paramount "Presents" 4K: although there are reviews that called it disappointing. It is also regarded as a vast improvement over all previous versions by many others as well.

This is a problematic release, because while scenes like the aerial shots at the beginning looked pristine and shows new detail, many others are suspiciously identical across all three Blu-ray releases (the 2012, 2020 and this 2024).

Some defects on this are unfixed from the 2020 Blu-ray for some reason. (See this review and its discussion.)
