France Spectrum 4K Blu-ray

Best Audio:

2002 TF1 Vidéo France DVD

Audio Notes:

France 4K Blu-ray audio is in the wrong pitch, plus the new 5.1 mix is worse than DVD's

Additional Info:

The version screened at the Cannes International Film Festival ran 119 minutes. Hsiao-Hsien Hou then re-cut the movie following its Cannes premiere and reduced the running time to 105 minutes, this is the only version available on home video. Most of the deleted footage came from the "Vicky in Japan" sequences and is included as an extra on some releases.

Best Video:

Original credits: 2009 Blu-ray/2013 3D Blu-ray (preference: the 2009 Blu-ray has rendering errors not on the DVD release or the 3D version but does have the original Disney and Pixar logos caps. Fur textures are differently animated on the 3D version as well) 4K Blu-ray is an upscale.

Outtake credits: 2002 UK Collector's Edition DVD (US release has the outtakes only in the fullscreen version)

Best Audio:

AC3 5.1, Cinema DTS, or half bitrate DTS DVD

Audio Notes:

(only on the UK Collector's Edition)

Isolated score is on the DVD

The film is titled Sorcerer's Stone in the US, India, and the Philippines.

Universal 4K Blu-ray

Sources: slow.pics (opens in a new tab)

Video Notes:

Universal 4K Blu-ray - caps. Looks stunning against the horribly neutralized old master. Very glad Deakins supervised the new grade and had Universal restore his color filters.

Best Audio:

Universal Blu-ray

Audio Notes:

Universal Blu-ray (included in the 4K edition) has the original 5.1 mix not on the 4K disc

Additional Info:

The original 5.1 surround mix from the 2011 USA BD was included alongside the new Atmos upmix. The compatibility track is a downmix of the Atmos. The Atmos is overall lightly remixed with noticeably more high frequencies rolled-off relative to the old 5.1. I think the 5.1 sounds better. The 5.1 mix from the USA BD was used as it sounds essentially the same as the EUR BD (with some minor loudness differences) while not featuring the dither noise and low frequency noise that the EUR has. Commentaries between the USA UHD and USA BD are the same, with both featuring Dolby Surround metadata

Audio comparison: 5.1 surround

Director: Cameron Crowe

Video format: UHD Blu-ray

WB 4K Blu-ray

Video Notes:

Caveat: mostly great video but the 4K Blu-rays have had additional DNR applied in some scenes on top of the DNR that had been applied in post-production and was already present on the DVDs & Blu-rays

The 2020 Blu-ray (the one without the green tint) may be better than the 4K Blu-ray?

Best Audio:

New Line Blu-ray

Audio Notes:

New Line Blu-ray have the original 6.1 mixes

Additional Info:

4K Blu-ray set is missing extras from the old Blu-ray/DVD releases

The 2011 Blu-ray notoriously had a green tint, the 2020 one removes it.

4K Remaster: Carlotta FR 4K Blu-ray
Original digital master: Tokyo Shock US Blu-ray

Video Notes:

(see video/audio notes)

The original master is of poor quality, blurry with some damage and bad levels, which the 4K remaster improves upon, with better detail in compression. Unfortunately, the 4K master has significant issues with color posterization, making it look like poor quality digital video rather than 16mm film. Comparison between masters, Carlotta/Tokyo Shock clip
