Films where Universal's release is the pick. How picks are made

Universal Pictures' home-video division, based in Universal City, California, started in 1980 as MCA Videocassette and has used its current name since 2016. It releases the studio's library, from the 1930s monster films and Hitchcock's later work to new releases, on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD. Since 2021 North American discs have gone through Studio Distribution Services, the Warner Bros. joint venture that disc maker Conectiv bought in August 2026.

Best colors of the Cornetto Trilogy on 4K Blu-ray, very good detail, blacks are crushed if not as much as on Shaun and Hot Fuzz

Video Notes:

Universal 4K Blu-ray see caps: The film was finished as a 4K DI in 2005. The same master was now used for the 4K disc with a new HDR grade supervised by Roger Deakins. The old Blu-ray was badly encoded, the 4K looks much better

Best Audio:

No original audio on Universal 4K Blu-ray. The Atmos remix is unusually bad. Blu-ray DTS-HD 5.1 for original mix.

Universal 4K Blu-ray

Video Notes:

Excellent new transfer. Except for periodic blocking in highlights, which isn’t too obvious in motion, this is a strong disc. I’d suggest blue as there’s only Atmos sound and the most recent Blu-ray from 2013 was also from a new master and isn’t too bad.

Audio Notes:

Atmos mix is very bad with many new sound effects added. The old 5.1 is probably derived from the 6-track, with surrounds minimally upmixed. DVD has the 6-track as 4.1, but with more muffled EQ.

Director: Jonathan Mostow

Universal 4K Blu-ray or StudioCanal 4K Blu-ray?

Video Notes:

Universal has burnt-in English subs for Germany dialogue, slightly different HDR and color grading to the StudioCanal.

Best Audio:

Universal Blu-ray

Audio Notes:

Universal Blu-ray has the original DTS-HD 5.1

For the 7.1 remix, the DTS-X of the Universal is clipped on the front speakers while the Atmos of the M6 is a very tame mixdown.
