Films where Universal's release is the pick. How picks are made

Universal Pictures' home-video division, based in Universal City, California, started in 1980 as MCA Videocassette and has used its current name since 2016. It releases the studio's library, from the 1930s monster films and Hitchcock's later work to new releases, on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD. Since 2021 North American discs have gone through Studio Distribution Services, the Warner Bros. joint venture that disc maker Conectiv bought in August 2026.

Netherlands Remain in Light or UK Universal 4K Blu-ray, See caps: Ferrari (2023) | Slowpoke Pics

Best Audio:

Netherlands Remain in Light

Additional Info:

All three discs come from the same master and share the same Dolby Vision grade, with identical dynamic metadata and CMv4.0 on all three. The Eagle Pictures disc is the only Profile 7 FEL, the Remain in Light and Universal UK discs are both MEL. On paper that gives the Italian finer coding precision, but it doesn't buy anything on this film, the grain is heavy enough to hide base layer quantisation on its own and none of the three discs bands. It also costs something, the Eagle Pictures encode noticeably smooths grain in flatter, low contrast areas, so a fair bit of fine texture that both other discs keep is simply gone. Edges and overall definition are fine, but the Dutch and UK discs clearly hold the film's texture better and are the ones to get. Between those two it's very close, with the Dutch keeping slightly more grain across most of the scenes checked. Worth noting as well, the Dutch and UK discs have their title cards in English while the Italian keeps them in Italian.

Criterion DVD for the original Dolby Stereo (lossless). 5.1 upmix on BDs is fine, DTS:X is revisionistic

Audio Notes:
  • the only track on Universal 4K, which is in DTS:X, has a mixing error of around 6dB too low on side channels, otherwise very similar to other 5.1 mixes.

2025 Universal 4K Trilogy Steelbook / 2026 standalone

Video Notes:

2025 Universal 4K Trilogy Steelbook / 2026 standalone is better than previous disappointing 2022 4K Blu-ray (excessive DNR). Not a whole new scan but the grain has been left mostly intact.

Best Audio:

Cinema DTS

Audio Notes:

Cinema DTS is OG 5.1 mix.

Otherwise: 2022 4K Blu-ray’s DTS:X remix is more faithful than 2026’s Atmos remix.

3D Blu-ray’s 7.1 remix has reportedly less distortion than the OG 5.1 mix, and is presumably more faithful than the DTS:X remix.

Better than the original 2019 4K Blu-ray, but there are a few shots with heavy DNR that look worse than the old 4K Blu-ray. The 2024 France StudioCanal 4K Blu-ray has a better encode than the 2024 Universal 4K Blu-ray (but forced France subs)
