Films where Disney's release is the pick. How picks are made

Disney started distributing its films on video in 1980, traded as Buena Vista Home Video from 1987 and has used the Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment name since 2007. The label covers Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Studios titles on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD. Sony has made and distributed its North American discs since 2024, and Disney cut its home-entertainment publicity team in April 2026.

Director: David Fincher

Best English-Friendly:

Disney 4K Blu-ray or Fox 2009 Blu-ray or Kinowelt Entertainment 2008 Germany Blu-ray for a purist version

Best Video:

Disney 4K Blu-ray or Fox 2009 Blu-ray for a purist version or Kinowelt Entertainment 2008 Germany Blu-ray from the original 1999 telecine transfer

Video Notes:

Disney 4K Blu-ray, while a good release by itself, is very revisionist albeit made by Fincher. It has a huge amount of tinkering, a different grade, and at times uncanny with the sharpening. Caps of just how revisionist the new master is.

Best Audio:

Cinema DTS

Audio Notes:

All Blu-ray tracks have significant limiting.

Disney 4K Blu-ray has some alterations, otherwise similar to the Fox Blu-ray

Best Audio:

2001 Disney DVD for the original 6.1 mix

Additional Info:

The international version replaces the American flag in Buzz’s speech with a spinning CGI globe and the American Anthem is replaced with an exclusive piece by Randy Newman titled the ‘One World Anthem’. Bizarrely the 2005 UK DVD retains the US anthem while having the CGI globe.

The original November 1999 end credits start a second earlier on the theatrical versions (found on bootleg telesyncs) rather than the 2001 or 2005 DVDs.

Director: Lee Unkrich

The South African version has Jeremy Mansfield (a famous radio personality) as the voice of Chatter Phone.

Best Audio:

BD LPCM 5.1

Audio Notes:

The DTS-HD on the UHD has been dynamically compressed, has had its center channel boosted, and surrounds lowered (typical modern nearfield mix for soundbars).  Very different from the BD and DVD tracks.  The BD LPCM is basically just a lossless version of the DTS and AC3 from the original DVD (the AC3 actually being the superior mix on that particular release).
