Radiance 4K Blu-ray

Video Notes:

Solid upgrade and the increase in resolution works well with the 16mm source in making it appear a bit more film-like than the Blu-ray, which is obviously very good as well

UK StudioCanal 4K Blu-ray or FR Pathé 4K Blu-ray

Sources: slow.pics (opens in a new tab)

Video Notes:

UK StudioCanal 4K Blu-ray or FR Pathé 4K Blu-ray share the same disc (caps)

The StudioCanal UHD has a much better encode than the Lionsgate UHD with the same grade. The Vuelta UHD has a decent encode but it is in an incorrect color space and has German overlays.

Audio Notes:

UK disc includes only 5.1.

The 7.1 mix included on the Lionsgate UHD appears to be identical to the 2006 USA BD's LPCM 7.1 track and to be a straight transfer of the theatrical Dolby Digital Surround EX mix (originally matrixed 6.1, with the rear surrounds in the discrete 7.1 presentation being dual mono). The old GER BD has a 6.1 mix but it is a poor remix and the GER UHD has an Auro-3D remix of the 7.1 mix (mostly adjusted surround levels). All other discs offer a 5.1 mix, including the Studio Canal UHD

Best Audio:

Complete Cut:

  • 2021 Japan Square Enix 4K Blu-ray has a superior Dolby Atmos remix

  • 2021 Japan Square Enix remastered Blu-ray has a superior original Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix

Original Cut:

  • 2005 Japan Square Enix DVD for the Japanese audio, 2005 US Sony DVD for the English dub

Additional Info:

Japan 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray have an exclusive end credit song on the Complete cut that is not present on international releases by Sony.

All Japanese releases of the Complete cut have English dub options, but no English subtitles for the original Japanese audio or on-screen text. Original cut only has Japanese audio without subtitles on the Japanese DVD.

All international releases by Sony only have dubtitles for the Japanese audio, not a proper translation of the Japanese script.

Best English-Friendly & Video:

Old Paramount Blu-ray

Video Notes:

Old Paramount Blu-ray better than new 4K Blu-ray: smeary grain/detail, poor contrast

Best Audio:

4K Blu-ray and New Blu-ray

Audio Notes:

4K Blu-ray and New Blu-ray has lossless TrueHD, Old Blu-ray just has lossy Dolby Digital

Video Notes:

From Fus1on:
Because this is a Judd Apatow comedy from the mid-2000s, it's not quite a stunner in 4K, but it's a MASSIVE improvement from that god-awful 2008 Blu-ray. Very nice grain management, and none of that awful edge enhancement from the old Blu-ray.

Sources: slow.pics (opens in a new tab)

Video Notes:

Warner Bros 4K Blu-ray caps. Original 1.85 framing restored, much better colors, image detail and a film stock-like tone curve was restored.

Best Audio:

Warner Bros HD-DVD

Audio Notes:

Warner Bros HD-DVD has the original 6.1 mix in a better format than the Blu-ray (Dolby Digital Plus instead of standard Dolby Digital), but is still lossy and a disc prone to disc rot. The Blu-ray is a good alternative.
