Congress chartered this San Francisco nonprofit in the National Film Preservation Act of 1996, and it began operating in 1997. It gives grants to US archives, museums and libraries to preserve orphan films, and many of the results stream free on its website, some in HD. Its Treasures from American Film Archives DVD sets gathered rare silent, documentary and nontheatrical films.
